❓ Why Is Biodegradable Glitter No Longer Enough?

In the past, people thought "biodegradable" was all we needed, but that word alone doesn't guarantee safety for the environment.

Some biodegradable products break down only in industrial settings (like super-hot composting facilities), not in nature. Plus, many so-called biodegradable glitters still contain a significant amount of ‘plastic’ i.e., non-compliant polymer and don’t follow the new EU laws against microplastics. The EU microplastic legislation closes the loophole that a biodegradable particle can still contain ‘plastic polymers’ by setting the minimum level for compliant/non-microplastic polymers to greater than 99% of the polymer contained in the particle.

• Achieving TÜV OK Biodegradable WATER is a harder standalone test/cert than OECD301…
• HOWEVER, the EU2023-2055 demands that >99% (not even = 99%, it’s less than 99%) of the polymer content in a glitter particle has to be ‘non-microplastic’ i.e. complaint polymer. This is what makes the legislation extremely difficult to achieve.
• Then once that’s achieved, the next challenge is make it work in application and to still look like traditional glitter!
