Can Biodegradable Glitter Be Holographic?

Or, better yet, can holographic glitter be biodegradable? If you had asked that question last year, the answer would have been a big, bold, with neon lights "NO." However 2022 is starting on the right foot, bringing us the world's first biodegradable, plant-based, plastic-free holographic glitter!

But First, What Is Holographic Glitter?

By definition, holographic glitter relies on the interaction of light with evenly spaced minuscule striations embossed on the surface of the glitter particle. This gives the glitter an eye-catching prismatic effect where the surface reflects different colors of light in every direction.

Indeed, holographic glitter achieves color through physics and optics principles. The result? A rainbow-colored spark even though there are no dyes or pigments involved. Impressive, right?

Before Bioglitter™ HOLO came into the picture, biodegradable glitter couldn't have a holographic effect, and the reason behind this is completely technical. Embossing a fine pattern onto a plant-based film is extremely difficult, and until recently, it was a mere illusion. But not anymore!

Holographic Glitter Is Far from Being Eco-Friendly or Biodegradable

Regular glitter, including holographic glitter, is made from PET plastic, PLA polylactic acid, PVC, or cellulose acetate. So, glitter is plastic, or it is mainly based on plastic. And because each particle is less than five millimeters long, glitter is considered microplastic.

As such, glitter is essentially litter! Immediately after its use, it ends up in wastewaters, oceans, rivers, and landfills, waiting up to 1,000 years to completely degrade. Not a pretty picture.

In the meantime, glitter and other microplastics can greatly disrupt marine ecosystems and even be digested by sea creatures causing their death. Something as tiny, beautiful, and seemingly innocent as glitter could represent a true biohazard.

Beware of Fake Biodegradable Holographic Glitters

Glitter is far from being eco-friendly, and the same applies to the so-called holographic biodegradable glitters until March 2022, at least (more on that later).

Many manufacturers nonchalantly claim their holographic compostable glitter is eco-friendly and will degrade. But, even though these glitter brands may be plant-based, they are not designed to decompose in a natural environment, which is the key requirement for a product to be deemed biodegradable

Holographic compostable glitter can only be degraded in an industrial composter under special conditions of temperature, pressure, high humidity, and bacteria.

Additionally, industrial composting of glitter after being recollected into recycling compost bins is highly unlikely (not to say impossible), considering the size of glitter and its nature. It gets everywhere, and it is hard to clean after and gather in one place!

Bioglitter™ HOLO Is Here to Be Your Sustainable Sparkle!

As humans, we are naturally drawn to shiny things, perhaps as a reminder of our ancestors' need to seek out fresh water. So, you could say (without taking things too far) that loving glitter is embedded right into our DNA.

Aside from biology and evolution, and understanding that consumers won't give up glitter anytime soon, there have been a number of eco-friendly glitter options to keep the spark alive while protecting the planet.

So, leading the glitter industry and optimizing our previous Bioglitter™ products, as of March 2022, we are proud to announce that Bioglitter™ HOLO is the first and only certified biodegradable holographic glitter in the world.

Developing Bioglitter™ HOLO was no easy task. It has been the most challenging product developed to date, with almost four years in the making! After all, embossing biodegradable base film is difficult, but it was finally perfected after years of intensive research.

A beautiful holographic effect is created with the new Bioglitter™ HOLO, which reflects and decomposes light in its different colors for a rainbow effect.

Under direct non-diffuse light sources like sunlight or LEDs, Holographic Bioglitter™will produce a multicolored whirlwind of brightness. The shine is indistinguishable from traditional microplastic glitter!

New call-to-action

Bioglitter™ HOLO Is The ONLY Biodegradable Holographic Glitter in The World

Our Bioglitter HOLO has a unique regenerated cellulose core film derived from eucalyptus hardwoods instead of plastic. And the materials come from certified plantations in line with PEFC standards.

Also, Bioglitter HOLO is proven to biodegrade under natural conditions, such as freshwater environments. It degrades just as a leaf would, turning into water, biomass, and carbon dioxide as soon as it comes in contact with nature. It only needs the help of bacteria, water, oxygen, and heat to quickly and safely start the biodegradation process.

As such, Bioglitter™ HOLO holds the TÜV Austria' OK biodegradable WATER' certification (Logo/Cert Serial Number S0933), which is the highest level of biodegradability certification in the world! It also complies with the EU Microplastic legislation of the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA), due to be published in 2022.

All these tests (including the freshwater test) and certifications determine whether or not a polymeric material is considered microplastic and biodegradable. So, with Bioglitter™ HOLO, you can rest assured that you are not contributing to the pollution of oceans, rivers, and landfills.

Also, Bioglitter™ HOLO has an extremely low heavy metals content, less than 0.5 ppm antimony (total content analysis), and is allergen-free.

The Bioglitter™ Family Expands!

Bioglitter™ HOLO is embossed to create a dazzling holographic effect, and it is coated with natural resin. It comes in different sizes and is currently available in silver only, both for:

  • Cosmetic purposes – for leave-on and rinse-off products.

  • Deco purposes – for arts and crafts, coating, and printing. Deco BioglitterTM HOLO GC is suited for dry, water-based, silicone-based, and oil-based applications.

Our Holographic Bioglitter™ completes our catalog of top-notch glitter products. With our Bioglitter™ SPARKLE, you have a metallic finish –with Bioglitter™ PURE, you get an opalescent glow –and finally, with Bioglitter™ HOLO, you get the ultimate holographic effect. A killer trifecta!
